How To Build a Whiskey Table
For this project, I had a client who wanted a custom whiskey End table with a drink rail. They also want it to complement the existing architecture of their house, so I pulled some design cues from a built-in bookcase and created a custom stain to match it.

Buillding Segmented Ring Sculpture
Переглядів 3,1 тис.5 місяців тому
For this project, I built a segmented ring sculpture with a metal patination backdrop. The challenge was deciding what to create with leftover Wenge wood scraps from a previous project. Instead of discarding the scraps, I imposed a design restriction on whether to use them or throw them away. I used inspiration from a past project and the constraint of using the Wenge offcuts to design this pro...

Today’s Furniture Design came from wanting to Explore a new technique. About a decade ago, I was watching a TV show called Redwood Kings. The show featured crazy tree houses made from redwood stumps and other salvaged Items. While watching the show, one of the guys demonstrated how he made these crooked posts form a straight 4x4 on the bandsaw by basically turning the 4x4 inside out. I immediat...

Beautiful table with a great design. I'm glad I found your "page" on UA-cam.
thanks
This is a great project, Brian. It looks great!
Thank!
Thanks for sharing. What do you use to set your tablesaw to 45? I’m just struggling to find an accurate method for really tight mitres. Great tip with sneaking up on the cut too.
That's beautiful. New sub. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the sub!
That's an elegant little table, dude. I've never had any kind of positive luck with water stains, and found that a very dilute tint in denatured alcohol works best for me - kind of eliminates the stress of the whole "Oh, no! An overlap mark!" Your stain technique is good. One other thing, as a huge fan of A&C and Craftsman furniture, cloud lifts are HARD WORK to execute, so I really like your approach with the cove bit and template... might be borrowing that idea soon. Don't worry, I'll put it back where I found it.
Good stuff, Brian. I wouldn't change a thing about how you edit and narrate
Thanks man, I spent a lot of time on this edit. I appreciate you appreciating the edit.
Beautiful design and execution. Is there certain species of wood that are better candidates for dyes than others? Obviously white oak, but how about other blonde woods like ash, hard/soft maples…?
I've had good luck with ash, hickory, white oak. I've had blotching challenges with maples, cherry, and pine. I think the key is to test before committing. I make several samples in different woods to be sure my client likes the look of them.
Maybe I missed it but what type of wood did you use?
I used white oak
In my case, it would be hold my bottle of wine. Good tip about the damp rag. Rather than use all the butcher paper to cover the bench, I have a couple of cheap disposable picnic table clothes that so far I have had for over 18 months. Just being 'Frugal'. 😊
Very nice work.
I'm curious how the paduk spacers did not throw off your ring connecting correctly? Seem like they would have?
You have to account for the thickness, I made them an 1/8" to make the math easier when figuring out the diameter of the circle. As for the angle, since they are parallel to the wenge segment they don't change the angle, just increase the diameter of the circle.
Thy for sharing. Beautiful woodwork.
You can use the thin wedges you removed from the legs to set the angle for the shelf trim, and for the shelf dados. Better to use the actual part than to measure.
That is a method, however, I hand-planned the saw marks off the legs, so the angle was no longer the same as the wedge. Also on thin parts like that there is a tendency for them to move due to releasing tension in the wood. So I felt measuring, and doing a test cut was the most accurate way to be sure nothing moved on me.
Great tip Brian on wiping the dye with a damp cloth! I noticed the same thing and it's a game changer! thanks
excellent, as always, Brian! what did you use for the final finish?
Conversion varnish
Nice job, thanks for sharing.
Nice job. I really like that color. Would love to know the color formula.
Thanks, I use general finishes dye stain. Burgundy with a little dark brown. Light brown toner in the top coat.
This is what i am looking for. I don't want to use router because i want to feel how ancient people do things accurately without electric tools. I want to be more passionate on what i am doing. By the way, i am just starting on woodworking and I've had a lot of failures now. Still trying to learn more in youtube. Thanks for this video...
I think the radial arm saw is safer than a table saw, at least you see the blade.

Very nice work. Wow
I’m not convinced that jig for drilling the rear indexing hole is made correctly. Did you notice too the locating pins on the slides themselves are in different positions right&left?
I ended up just drilling the right hand slides indexing hole by hand. Very strange
I haven't had a problem with things lining up using the jig. I wonder if the pins got moved out of their starting position. The thing is design so that once the pins are in the holes, you can turn the plastic wheel to adjust them up and down, this adjusting the fit of the drawer.
nice! but is that a guitar speaker or a car speaker?
You can watch the full video here to get the origin story on the amp and speaker ua-cam.com/video/acpqVeJJc6Q/v-deo.htmlsi=9zDPZwZVrJPvj-jN
That's not a router table that's router furniture
Wicked nice man!
This is one of the best way to approach this type of project with limited tools.
Fantastic
Beautiful work, love the cabinet, metal and wood works really well
Very cool, Brian! I haven't been here since our honeymoon in 2005. I'll remember this the next time I'm in the area.
Fantastic! Beautiful tables and buffet! I appreciate the way you talk about your work. Thanks for making your videos.
Rad. Well done😌
Great but you forgot to mention thats its nearly 1 00 euro a foot , crazy expensive use HAFELE CONCEALED HIDDEN SHELF SUPPORT BRACKET FIXING MOUNT FOR FLOATING SHELVES will work on 24 cm shelf
OMG WHY ARE YOU YELLING!!!! YOU MISSED THE POINT OF THE VIDEO TO FIND A SUPPORT THAT THE CLIENT DIDN'T HAVE TO DRILL INTO THE SHELF. HAFELE REQUIRES DRILLING
@@Benham_Design 🤣 YOU THINK ITS EASIER TO SPEND YOUR DAY ROUTERING OTHER THAN DRILLING A FEW 6 INCH HOLES FOR 4 PINS THAT COST 16 EURO , CRACK ON ,
@@tcoyle1950 again you are missing the point that clients that aren't handy don't want to locate studs and drill into a shelf. This is set up for the client and all they have to do is screw the bracket to the wall. I get paid to route a grove instead of drill holes.
Yeah, man. 100%. Keep moving forward with one eye on where you've been (are?). Rad
Straight talent! Wish I had a skill and passion like this to pay rent!
It's still a cool looking piece!
Brian, check your history books - Michaelangelo, DaVinci, and many more you'll recognize literally took commissions they hated to 'pay the rent.' I'd look at it as practice time to keep the skills sharp. And hey, rent.
Hey Brian, The eternal battle of the artisan! I see the balance being entirely in the mind of the person creating the functional art. That said, I know way too well, the pendulum between getting things done and the desire to make pieces which are both challenging and satisfying will sway back and forth continually. I guess, to an extent, that is what makes makers do what they do. Good video, and as you can tell it made me stop and think. Back to riding the pendulum! Regards James One Handed Maker - Australia
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the matter.
Great video. Short and to the point. I like the idea of normalizing that not every project has to be a completely original beautiful show piece.
Next video could be a short one making those cool drawer pulls or some other versions you're liking ATM.
May be "just" rent but it sure looked of very high quality. Nicely done.
Everyone wants to be an artist but unfortunately most starve. It's okay to make rent. Even most of the time.
Wow, amazing,
You can't make your own jigs and just not sell them? Woodworkers consistently make things so much harder for themselves. It's very bizarre.
I'm not sure what you're referring to, I'm not in the jig making business
This is an awesome tutorial. Much appreciated.
What type of wood did you use for this?
Walnut is the darker wood, cherry is the center of the drawer front., and Adler is what the drawer box is made from.
@@Benham_Design looks great! Thank you!
Thanks for showing your great design. Great workmanship.
Really huge thanks for taking the time to make this. I'm having flakes on the finished piece and I now suspect it's because I don't do anything with the gun between coats and not cleaning the cup really well like you do here.
Update: There was huge chunks of pudding-like finish in the needle housing. Cleaned everything thoroughly and I just did the best coat I ever have. Thanks so much.
@AssafLevyIL that's awesome, glad my video helped
Nice!
